The Best Ways to Backup Your Data

September 12, 2013

backup dataAt ITS Inc., our IBM certified consultants know a lot about backing up your data. Backing up your data is the only way to keep your important files secure in the event of a system failure, natural disaster, data theft, or network virus. There are many different methods for backing up your data, with varying pros and cons. Use these tips from ITS Inc., developed by our IBM certified consultants, to learn about the best ways to backup your data.

Backup Methods

Our IBM certified consultants at ITS Inc. recommend these three methods of data backup:

  • External Hard Drive: The external hard drive is one of the easiest and most popular ways to back up data. You can purchase external hard drives in many different capacities at affordable prices. The downside of external hard drives is that they can also become damaged or lost.
  • Backup Software: Backup software is useful if you have a lot of data to store and need a customized method that assists you rather than having to backup manually. Most computers come with backup software installed; however, you can purchase more customizable methods.
  • Cloud Storage: Cloud storage is an excellent option if you are concerned about your data in the long term. This involves storing your data via the web to an outside server. Be sure to use a reputable name, such as Amazon or Dropbox, to ensure that your data is safe.

Backup Tips

To keep your data as secure as possible, follow these tips from our IBM certified consultants at ITS Inc.

  • Use Multiple Methods: It is best to use at least two of the backup methods mentioned above. If your data is stored in multiple places using multiple methods, you will be sure to have a copy even if one fails, becomes lost, or is destroyed.
  • Store Off-Site: You should also store at least one copy of your backup off-site. This can take the form of Cloud storage, or you can place an external hard drive in an area that is safe from any potential natural disasters.
  • Backup Regularly: The only way to ensure that all of your data is safe all of the time is to backup regularly. You should backup your data at least once a week, or once a day if possible.
  • Check Your Backups: Finally, you should always check your backups to make certain that they are functioning correctly. Open files to make sure they have copied, and check to see that all of the correct folders are in the backup.
